Racing’s back: Five potential outsiders for Newcastle on Monday

Horses coming out of the mist in the last race at Newcastle, 18/10/19

The chance to bet on British racing returns on Monday when Newcastle hosts the sport’s comeback card. Field sizes will be capped at 12 runners per race but that is unlikely to make finding winners much easier. These are bound to be competitive contests, but here are a few likely outsiders who could give you a run for your money.

We will have Newcastle tips for every race live on Sunday but in the meantime, here are five potential outsiders James Stevens has picked out especially for myracing:

Tiercel

(1.00 Brenkley Handicap)

This seven-year-old knows Newcastle extremely well and ran a cracker when a close second at the track just before the shutdown kicked in. If he runs as well again this time he should be a contender.

Global Spirit

(1.35 Burradon Handicap)

Here’s a horse who used to find winning impossible but he was a changed character last year when trained for the first time by Roger Fell in North Yorkshire. His two victories in 2019 came over six and seven furlongs but he always runs on well at the end of his races and could be even better over the mile trip he would be tackling for the first time if declared to run on Monday.

Brian The Snail

(3.20 Woolsington Handicap)

This Richard Fahey-trained sprinter only raced once on the all-weather last year but that outing at Newcastle was his second-best run in the whole of 2019. He could well enjoy a return to the north east.

Shoot To Kill

(3.55 Ponteland Handicap)

George Scott seemed to like this horse as a juvenile, sending him to Ascot for a maiden on his second outing. He was outclassed there but a reproduction of his second on Chelmsford’s all-weather track would give him a chance this time.

Makawee

(5.05 Hazlerigg Handicap)

David O’Meara trains this stayer who will be dropping back in trip and class. One of his 2019 successes came at York, where he also finished second twice during the summer. He should be dangerous in this easier grade.
