Post-Cheltenham gamble as horse backed from 33/1 into 3/1 at Newcastle

4.57 Newcastle

The big gamble of the day runs in the finale at Newcastle, the bumper on the card, and trained by Tom Lacey, Thomas Rainwater has seen significant support in the market with Stan Sheppard doing the steering.

Backed from a high of 33/1 all the way into 3/1, some firms are even as short as 5/2 on this horse now. Take note that the favourite Typhoon Flyer was taken out of the race but nonetheless it’s a big gamble all the same.

Thomas Rainwater is a well bred Walk In The Park gelding who was sent off 5/2 when a poor sixth in a bumper at Exeter last month, fading out of things after slipping in the straight.

He was behind the easy winner Teeshan on the day which looks like really strong form, given Paul Nicholls’ runner took his chance in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival this week.

Given the market support for Thomas Rainwater the last day, clearly connections were expecting a big run from their horse, and with the money coming in for him again, they will be expecting a much improved showing.

It’s unlikely there will be anything as good as Teeshan in opposition and he has a strong chance in this.
