It’s fair to say that Paul Nicholls isn’t a frequent visitor to Hexham and the reason why seems fairly obvious. The 642-mile round trip is a long and costly one so it has to be noteworthy that he sends one runner there on Monday. Nicholls will be desperate to pick up as much prize money as possible between now and the end of the season as he chases down Willie Mullins.

5.05 Hexham

Stratagem is the horse in question and he’s a likely candidate in this hunter chase. The eight-year-old came over from France having won a three-year-old hurdle at Auteuil and he got off the mark in Britain on just his second start. That was a facile victory at Kelso and the winning margin of 24 lengths suggested he could be very smart.

Truthfully a little disappointing since, the switch to hunter chases appears to have revitalised him somewhat and he won twice in four starts back in 2022. He may well have needed the run when a well beaten fourth on his first start for 650 days at Southwell last month and it would be unfair to judge him too harshly on that effort.

Entitled to improve plenty for that, he very much looks like the one to beat here. Ben Haslam’s Jerrysback is likely to provide the stiffest competition but Stratagem has significantly less miles in his legs and can take full advantage.
