Royal Ascot Outsiders: Owen fancied to build on 33-1 Tuesday winner

After a day filled with star performances, it’s time to look ahead to the second day of Royal Ascot! It’s another seven-race programme, with the feature contest being the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. Lord North looks to defend his crown, but he faces stiff competition from Aidan O’Brien’s Love and Armory.

We’ll have horse racing tips for every race at Royal Ascot, but I’m back with another set of outsiders! There’s plenty of big fields, including the 30-runner Royal Hunt Cup, and the value is there to be grabbed. See all my analysis below, and good luck with your Royal punting!

3.05 Ascot – Queen’s Vase

A novice scorer at Kempton in January, LAW OF THE SEA (18-1) was an impressive winner on turf debut at Leicester in April. He brushed off a penalty with a smooth performance, tanking into contention and blasting clear when asked to extend.

He was sent off just 4-1 for the Chester Vase on the back of that, but the ground was too soft for him and he was found to be coughing post race. As a result, you’d be happy to forgive that effort and he remains a horse of immense potential for top connections.

He’s granted a firmer surface for this start and stretching out to fourteen furlongs is another positive to his chances. He gains the services of James Doyle and with cheekpieces applied, he can prove that the Chester run was just a bump in a road filled with glory.

5.00 Ascot – Royal Hunt Cup

I tipped up REVICH (66-1) for the Lincoln earlier this year, finishing a brilliant sixth (and placed with some bookmakers) at 100-1, and I won’t be abandoning him for the Royal Hunt Cup. He’s done very little wrong in three starts this term and doesn’t deserve to be such a huge price.

Sixth in the aforementioned Lincoln, he’s subsequently finished fourth in a pair of handicaps at Newbury and Chester. Dropping back to seven furlongs didn’t seem to suit on the latter occasion and returning to the mile should help matters. He remains unexposed over this trip and given the way he finished off his races over the mile earlier this season, he has potential to really improve for it.

He’s a horse who likes to come with a late run, so this frantically-run mile should suit him down to the ground. He’ll be able to weave through horses in the closing stages and he loves a firmer surface. Hayley Turner takes over in the saddle too and she’s no stranger to success in the handicaps. Given the amount of places on offer (five with bet365), 66-1 is more than fair to me.

6.10 Ascot – Kensington Palace Stakes

George Boughey is having a remarkable season and I really like the chances of APRICOT MOON (50-1) in the lucky last. Many will be put off by her recent form figures, but if you dive deeper, it’s very easy to make a case for this four-year-old.

She was previously trained in Ireland by Andy Oliver, where she was a debut winner back in 2019. She’s failed to score since, but all of her targets have been pattern level assignments. Making her debut for Boughey at Nottingham back in April, she desperately needed the run over a trip that stretched her stamina.

It was also her first run after wind surgery, so this might be the perfect time to catch her. A mark of 90 is lenient based on her best form and she’s also fitted with the first time tongue-tie. All of her best form has seen her coming from off the pace, so this race will set up perfectly for her too. At huge odds of 50-1, I’d be surprised if she didn’t run a big race under Danny Tudhope.
