An extremely unique days racing, Laytown is the only race event run on the beach under the rules of the turf club. After a years hiatus, the event returns with its customary six race card. All the races are run over six or seven furlongs and there are bound to be some surprise winners, given the surface.
With so many unknowns, I have a pair of outsiders in mind for Laytown on Monday. In my estimation, they look overpriced, and they look set to run big races. Best of luck if you choose to follow and don’t forget to gamble safely. Safer Gambling Week begins today and you can find all the details, and resources, here.
He’s won just one of his 15 career starts, but this sort of level, and race, could be just what Haayem (16-1) needs. His form in 2021 hasn’t been without promise and given that his sole victory came on the All-Weather at Wolverhampton, there can be lots of optimism that he’ll run a strong race.
He’s actually run three times in claiming company this year, finishing midfield on all three occasions. That bodes well for his chances at this level and given that he was rated 75 this time last year, he’s not out of place on these terms. Luke McAteer removes five pounds and I don’t think he deserves to be quite this price.
Failing to figure in two sprint handicaps this autumn, stepping up in trip is key for Mary Salome (20-1). Although she has won over the shorter distances, the vast majority have come over seven furlongs and beyond. Rated 69 at present, she placed this summer off 76, so there’s no doubt she’s well treated.
Her best efforts in 2021 at flat tracks over seven furlongs and the mile, latterly at Cork when placing off 76. This test, on that evidence, should be well within her capabilities. Her jockey removes a very handy five pounds off her back and if she can match the best of her summer form, she’ll be a difficult horse to keep out of the frame.
