Oisin Murphy has been permanently based in Britain for a while now and has only been over to his native Ireland for a handful of rides since. It could be significant that he travels over to Leopardstown on Wednesday to take just one ride. His sole ride is in the feature race of the day and he’s looking to best last year’s emphatic Irish 1000 Guineas heroine. Buckaroo goes for Joseph O’Brien in the Listed Heritage Stakes. A lightly raced four-year-old, it’s likely that there’s plenty more to come from him. O’Brien’s charge started last season with a valiant second in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes here over 1m2f and he was just denied by a short head. The front two were almost four lengths clear of the others that day and the third went on to win a Group 3.
He was an impressive winner of a Listed race at the Curragh last May, when beating the subsequent Irish 2000 Guineas fourth by four lengths. It’s also worth noting that the well-beaten fifth won a Group 3 on its next start. His run in the Irish 2000 guineas next time can be forgiven as he suffered a wound during the race. That injury may have been significant as we haven’t seen him since.
Homeless Songs is in opposition here and she looks like the one to beat, after her emphatic Guineas victory last season. Buckaroo has it all to do to beat her off the back of a 319-day absence but if there’s anyone in this field capable of toppling Dermot Weld’s filly, it’ll be him.
