The feature race next weekend is the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday and it promises to be a cracking renewal, with last year’s winner Onesmoothoperator back for more. Can Brian Ellison’s globetrotting star do the business again?
Run over 2m½f, the Northumberland Plate is one of the biggest handicaps on the Flat calendar and one horse who seems to be ignored in the betting is last year’s winner, Onesmoothoperator, who will have a major chance of repeating the feat all going well.
Brian Ellison’s seven-year-old won this race impressively last year from a mark of 93 and although he is now 12lb higher in the weights, he definitely has the ability and class to defy a mark of 105 if everything falls into place for him.
He went on to win the Group 3 Geelong Cup in Australia last October and was backed from 100/1 into 6/1 for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington a couple of weeks later. Things didn’t go to plan for him on the day and he finished midfield, just over five lengths off the winner.
Onesmoothoperator has had a few spins in Meydan at the start of the year and it was clear as day that they were only prep runs for another tilt at the Northumberland Plate. He should be at the top of his game this weekend and he should run a big race.
Another worth noting is The King’s horse Reaching High, who had a luckless passage at Royal Ascot last week. Willie Mullins’ runner could go off favourite on the day and he certainly has to be respected too.
