Simply getting a horse to the races is a costly endeavour these days and the price of fuel alone is enough to make trainers stick to more local tracks. Devon-based handler Nigel Hawke certainly isn’t doing that on Wednesday though, as he sends one runner on the 738-mile round trip to Newcastle.
It’s worth noting that Hawke has had just four all-weather runners at Newcastle, one of which won, and that gives him a strike-rate of 25 per cent. Here we take a detailed look at the horse’s chances and who the main dangers could be. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Another Lifetime has had just two starts thus far and is therefore entitled to improve. He showed little in a maiden at the Curragh on debut for previous connections but it was a much better display on his first start for this yard last time out.
It was hardly the smoothest of runs either, as he broke slowly and stumbled soon after the start. Hawke’s gelding also looked a little green at a key stage and he did well to finish third under the circumstances. That experience won’t be lost on him either and we should see a more professional display this time around.
This does look like a pretty warm novice, with Andrew Balding’s last time out winner Royal Approval carrying a 7lb penalty, and a full-brother to Cracksman representing John & Thady Gosden. You also can’t rule out Karl Burke’s runner Northern Ruler, as he has placed in all three starts so far and the trainer has been in excellent form of late.
