Never fear the drift: why this horse can win the July Cup at Newmarket today 🏆

Oxted wins the July Cup

The weather might have turned on us and that will of course change things from a punting perspective as the ground gets softer. Nonetheless, we are in for a brilliant day of racing live on ITV Racing, and the highlight of the day is the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket where the best sprinters around will do battle. One horse in the race has been a big drifter this morning but that is not going to turn us off him! Let’s take a look at the horse in more detail below.

4.35 Newmarket

If one of the leading market contenders win today they may go down as the champion sprinter this season, and I have every confidence that the Julie Camacho three-year-old Shaquille can land the Pertemps Network July Cup, and if he does it will go a long way to claiming the aforementioned title.

Shaquille has won six of his seven races to date, so is obviously a hugely progressive horse, and his win last time was scintillating. He came from what one would call a terrible position to win the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, beating last year’s star juvenile Little Big Bear, despite losing many lengths at the start of the race.

There is no doubt that Shaquille has plenty of quirks, but to win in the manner that he did despite having to overcome such adversity means he is a top class animal. He will need to be on his best behaviour as he is taking on the older generation for the first time but he has a brilliant chance to stamp his class on this division today.
