‘Mud lovers will be in their element’ – Three to follow on heavy ground at Newbury

We are guaranteed pretty heavy conditions at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday so it is important to look for horses with proven form on heavy ground to find some value. We take a look at three horses who should relish these conditions on Saturday, and best of luck if you have a play. Remember to check out our free horse racing tips on the website.

1.20 Newbury

Highland Hunter has a really consistent record on heavy going, and Fergal O’Brien’s runner warrants plenty of respect despite having to carry 12 stone. Tom Broughton takes a valuable 5lb off in the saddle and this is a dour stayer who was a staying-on fourth in the Grand National Trial at Haydock when last seen, and this looks a good deal easier so he has every chance.

1.55 Newbury

Jetoile has mainly raced on decent ground, but the two times he did run on heavy ground, he finished second. He clearly handles testing conditions, and he stayed on well to win on soft ground at Aintree in October in the Old Roan Chase. He ran with credit when fourth at Cheltenham since, and could be a cut above his rivals here.

2.25 Newbury

A point winner in Ireland last March, Florencethemachine has a lovely profile and the lightly raced mare thrived on heavy ground when making all at Exeter on her third start for trainer Paul Nicholls in January. She pulled out plenty late on and has a lovely action in the mud, so everything looks set for her to run well again on her handicap debut off what looks like a fair opening mark.
