‘Mud lovers to the fore’ – Heavy ground horses to follow at Newcastle on Saturday

Buveur D'Air wins the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle

It’s a competitive day of racing on Saturday, with meetings across Britain and Ireland. Chelmsford, Chepstow, Kempton, Southwell and Newcastle are all on the docket, with Fairyhouse joining them across the water. We’ll have horse racing tips on the website, including a NAP of the Day.

Newcastle is a notoriously tough venue to get home in when the ground is heavy. You need a horse proven in the conditions to be successful and we’ve found three horses who fit that profile. The details can be found below.

1.38 Newcastle

Netywell could go off a short enough price in the extended 2m handicap chase seeking a hat-trick of wins, but this horse absolutely loves bottomless ground and he will take all the beating again. He won at Haydock by 16 lengths in December on heavy, and followed up off 7lb higher when easily winning at Ayr this month. There’s more to come.

2.08 Newcastle

The first try at an extreme trip might concern backers of Cruz Control in the Eider Chase, and probably rightly so as it’s a big step up in trip, but this boy is a big horse and he always looked a proper stayer in the making. He has won on heavy in the past and arrives here in very good form, so everything looks set for a big run.

3.27 Newcastle

Cheddleton was pulled up at Haydock on heavy ground in December when last seen, and has a lot to prove on recent form, but he was always a horse who enjoyed the mud and first time cheekpieces are now reached for. He is down to a very workable mark now and could take beating if he bounces back to form.
