Monster gamble unfolding on three John McConnell-trained runners in Ireland

Downpatrick Racecourse

There is a monster gamble unfolding on three John McConnell-trained runners in Ireland as we speak. McConnell has runners at Cartmel and Roscommon too today but all the money is on three of his runners at Downpatrick today.

He is an extremely shrewd trainer and knows how to find the winner’s enclosure. Let’s take a look at the three gambled on horses in more detail below.

2.10 Downpatrick

The first of the McConnell runners is Bout Time Bobby (15-2 into 9-2) running in a relatively weak maiden hurdle. The gelding contested a hot bumper at Limerick in May and ran well at the Galway Festival in July when 6th in a competitive bumper. He then finished 4th in a Sligo maiden hurdle and should appreciate this step up in distance.

2.45 Downpatrick

The second runner is Tango Theatre (33-1 into 9-1) who will run in the 80-109 handicap hurdle and on the face of it has an awful lot to find. The Shirocco mare has been well beaten off in all of her six career starts to date and has already run in handicap company twice. It is hard to see where the sufficient improvement is going to come from until the handicapper releases his grip. However, she still has low mileage and is with a shrewd operator so who knows?

3.55 Downpatrick

The last of the three heavily backed horses is the most heavily backed. Itsalonglongroad has been smashed into 2-1 in places from highs of 12-1 last night. That should take some significant money to do that. Simon Torrens will ride the top weight, who was below par at Tramore last time out but is a former course and distance winner.
