Monster gamble alert: Handicap debutant backed into 15/8 from 12/1 at Newcastle

It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on what the markets are doing as you can learn plenty about the level of confidence behind a horse. There are no guarantees in this game however and a well backed horse is never a certainty. There’s one eye-catching market mover at Newcastle on Tuesday whose price has capitulated. Available at 12/1 on Monday evening, the horse in question has been backed into 15/8 and is now favourite. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Cuban Storm is set to make his handicap debut for the Michael Dods yard in the penultimate race and the market is suggesting he’s a major player. The three-year-old had three starts last season and looked very green. With another winter on his back, there’s every chance he’s developed both physically and mentally.

Whilst none of his runs were particularly eye-catching, the most promising effort came at Redcar in September. He was hanging left throughout the race and was beaten by under seven lengths, despite stumbling three furlongs out. If you take the very impressive winner out of the race, that would have looked like a fair effort.

Significant improvement is expected upon switching to handicaps and an opening mark of 60 looks like a good starting point. Priced up by one firm at 12/1 on Monday evening, it would take a substantial amount of money to collapse his price this severely and he could be worth keeping an eye on.
