A missed break from Ma France at Dundalk yesterday saw a giant gamble thwarted. Having opened as big as 66-1, she was punted down to a starting price of 4-1. She made smooth progress and touched 1-10 in running before just getting run down by the favourite.
But for that slow break, she would’ve landed a touch and Hogan has another who has been nibbled at in the market at Navan this afternoon. There has not been an avalanche of cash yet but an opening show of as big as 11-1 has long gone, with 6-1 the best price out there at present.
Pale Blue Dot is the horse in question. He makes his handicap debut this afternoon on his second run in cheekpeices. He showed up for a long way at Thurles last time out before others with a sharper turn of foot than him took over from the home turn and he faded back into seventh.
There was plenty of promise to be gleaned from that, stepped up markedly in trip here. His best bumper run saw him beaten just a length and a half by Eurotiep on heavy ground at Punchestown. That rival ran Hollow Games to a length and three-quarters subsequently before winning both of his hurdles starts.
Deep conditions again today should suit him as he kicks off in handicaps which has to be a note of interest. His opening mark of 100 would look on the low side if he can rediscover that Eurotiep form again. As such, the move in the market, albeit only a small one at present, is one that needs to be watched carefully until race time.
