4.20 Newcastle

Rawalpindi Express has seen significant support for the 7f maiden at Newcastle late this afternoon and Tom Dascombe’s runner is now the best backed horse of the day after that flurry of money, and it has been sustained support all morning too.

The son of Lucky Vega was by no means an expensive purchase and he finished eighth of 11 on his debut over 6f at Nottingham earlier in the month. Sent off at 250/1, he was green and tardy early and made only modest late headway, beaten around eight lengths for a finish.

Connections obviously feel that he’s going to take a giant leap forward here and it was a hot enough maiden he contested on debut. The winner, Reciprocated, followed up under a penalty at Carlisle yesterday, while the fourth bolted up at Ripon since, so it certainly looked like an above-average contest.

Dascombe has had a quiet enough year to date with just five winners from 72 runners so he could do with a winner here today. He also has a modest record at Newcastle but clearly they expect big things from this boy today.
