Travel costs are constantly on the rise for owners and trainers so it’s worth taking note when a runner gets sent on a particularly long journey. That’s the case at Newcastle on Tuesday as Upper Lambourn-based handler Mark Usher is sending just one runner on the 588-mile round trip to the northeast. Connections won’t want to come home empty-handed so we’ve taken a detailed look at the horse’s chances below. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
All three of his previous runners at the track in 2025 failed to win, including this horse last week, but he was only beaten by a head and a similar performance could well be enough. He has maintained an excellent run of recent form since the autumn, winning four times over six or seven furlongs, and that’s expected to continue here.
Usher’s four-year-old was last successful here in December, where he just held off the fast-finishing runner-up over a furlong further. Last week’s narrow defeat can be marked up as he was three lengths clear of third and that suggests he’s capable of winning more races.
The in-form Beneficiary could be the biggest danger, who is effectively 2lb better off than he was when second here over 5f last time out. Perhaps Tickets deserves another chance also, although he’ll need to improve on his most recent effort over course and distance.
Obviously the handicapper is going to catch up with Tomorrow Day at some point but he races off an unchanged mark so now could be a good time to catch him.
