Long journey alert! Two horses are going on 714 and 656-mile trips on Monday

Getting a horse to the races is an expensive endeavour these days so it’s worth taking note when they’re sent on long journeys. There are two long distance travellers of note on Monday and they’re worth keeping an eye on. Archie Watson sends one runner on the 714-mile round trip to Ayr, whilst Ollie Pears sends one on a 656-mile round trip to Newton Abbot. We’ve assessed the horses’ chances of coming out on top and justifying their lengthy trips. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

2.10 Ayr

Underwriter looked very smart when winning over course and distance on debut back in May. Travelling strongly throughout the race, he took the lead approaching the two-furlong pole and kept on well to score by two lengths. There was loads to like about that performance and two subsequent winners have come out of the race.

It’s no surprise that connections decided to throw him into a Royal Ascot Group 2 after that, although things didn’t quite go to plan. He was too keen and faded to finish last in the end so the steep drop in grade will make a massive difference.

3.20 Newton Abbot

Max Of Stars has been in good form over the summer, winning two of her three most recent starts. She bolted up in a low grade race at Southwell and was narrowly denied at Market Rasen after that. Pears’ five-year-old returned to winning ways in a course and distance Class 3 when last seen.

Making all the running, she went clear with the runner-up and kept on well to pull three lengths clear in the end. A 4lb rise makes sense off the back of that success and she won’t be far away once again.
