Kyprios has been retired so back this 50/1 Ascot Gold Cup outsider instead

Star stayer Kyprios’ recent retirement announcement has blown the Ascot Gold Cup wide open and we’re now on the lookout for a new king. Whilst it might take a couple of years for us to find an established star, this year’s race is there for the taking.

Liam Bramall has picked out an intriguing 50/1 shot that could be worth considering for Royal Ascot’s 2m4f Group 1. Go ahead and check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Ascot Gold Cup

Burdett Road (50/1, bet365) is a very talented performer under both codes and was last seen finishing second in the Champion Hurdle. Whilst it’s noted that he received a large slice of luck that day, you can’t deny that he ran a nice race nonetheless.

He was beaten by less than a length when runner-up in the Grade 2 Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton before that and won the very competitive Greatwood Hurdle back in November. James Owen’s gelding has a rating of 111 on the Flat as well, which suggests he’s above handicap class.

The son of Muhaarar absolutely bolted up in a Listed contest at Newmarket in September and the well beaten second went on to win in the same grade next time. If settling better than he did in the Long Distance Cup, it would be no surprise to see him run a massive race.

We’ll learn more on Thursday, as he’s due to run at Sandown, but it’ll be a surprise if he fails to make the frame there. A career best performance would be required at this level but it would be unwise to rule him out and James Owen is a shrewd operator.
