It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the markets as you can learn plenty from doing so and we like to keep you informed with our daily market movers. Sometimes horses are so popular in the betting they deserve special attention and that’s the case at the Curragh on Saturday.
Johnny Murtagh has a runner which has been very well backed throughout the morning. The horse in question was as big as 16/1 but sustained market support has seen it’s price slashed to just 5/1 so we’ve taken a look at its chances. King Thistle (5/1, bet365) had looked progressive in his first three starts and ran a cracker to finish second in a maiden at Down Royal on his penultimate run.
Trainer Johnny Murtagh has won the last two renewals of this race and will be looking to make it a hat-trick here. It’s certainly not out of the question and King Thistle’s best form suggests he doesn’t have a great deal to find. Handicaps could be the making of him and he’s entitled to progress here.
Some of the big guns are represented here and Aidan O’Brien’s handicap debutante Sweet Chariot heads the betting. Joseph O’Brien runs last time out winner Girl Like You who is also up there near the head of the market. The latter is perhaps the biggest danger to King Thistle but Patrick McGettigan’s 10lb claim does give Murtagh’s runner a bit of an advantage.
Obviously improvement will be needed from his disappointing effort on handicap debut at Galway but the soft ground might not have helped and his previous run suggests he’s capable of better. Blinkers are on here and they could facilitate improvement if having the desired effect.
