Jockey who is unbeaten in this race at Newcastle has sole Thursday ride ✨ 🏇

Withold wins the Northumberland Plate

The 6.30pm at Newcastle Racecourse on Thursday looks like a run of the mill 0-55 rated Class 6 handicap on paper. It is just that but it has an extra added dimension to the race.

Under the radar claiming jockey Faye McManoman won the race in both 2019 and 2020. She rode Ginger Jam to victory for Nigel Tinkler at odds of 7-1 in 2019 and rode Atwaar to success for Charles Smith at odds of 10-1 in 2020.

McManoman didn’t have a ride in the race in 2021 but she has a ride in it this year for trainer Stella Barclay. The horse is likely to be a very nice price indeed so let’s take a look at that horse in more detail now.

6.30 Newcastle

Faye McManoman will try to make it three wins from three in this race aboard Sharrabang. This horse couldn’t get involved in a classified stakes race here the other day but drops down into handicap company again now.

The six-year-old son of Coach House is a dual winner over this course and distance, including a handicap off this very rating of 50 in February 2020. If he can bounce back to anywhere close to his best, he is clearly weighted to strike.

Sharrabang has run off higher marks than this in handicap company in each of his last nine handicap starts. The handicapper is starting to release his grip and finally connections must feel like they can get back to the winners’ enclosure.

It generally pays to have a high draw over this trip at Newcastle so drawn in stall nine is ideal. He might sit in off the pace and get some cover, then try make his challenge down the stand’s side rail.
