The ITV cameras are at York on Wednesday for Day 1 of the Dante Festival and there are three highly competitive handicaps on offer. We’ve selected three outsiders at big prices that can outrun their substantial odds. These include a 33-1 mystery package who makes his handicap debut, as well as 20-1 and 16-1 shots. Ajero (20-1, William Hill) put in a below-par effort on seasonal reappearance at Pontefract over 1m2f last time out. He never looked competitive that day but he should improve significantly for the run, as it was his first start for almost 200 days. We should see a sharper and more competitive horse this time around, with the benefit of having that previous run under his belt. Kim Bailey’s gelding finished third over this trip at Goodwood two starts ago and he looks capable of running a huge race off the same mark here.
Lethal Levi (16-1, bet365) is another who seems to have been priced up on the evidence of his seasonal reappearance. He looked like he needed the run badly at Newmarket last time out and he’s likely to appreciate the quicker ground at York. The handicapper is beginning to relent and has dropped Karl Burke’s charge down to a mark of 96 which is just 4lb higher than his last winning mark. A huge run could well be on the cards this time around.
Waiting All Night (33-1, bet365) makes his handicap debut here and he’s a completely unknown quantity. It’s hard to know what to expect from this horse but it could be worth taking a punt on him at such a big price. Richard Spencer’s gelding has some decent form in Group 2 company as a juvenile, including solid efforts in the Coventry Stakes and the July Stakes. The switch to handicaps looks well-timed and he should be competitive off a mark of 86.
