‘Is it a tip in itself?’ – Willie Mullins sends one 16-1 shot to Doncaster on Friday ⛴️

It’s always worth drawing attention to the fact that Willie Mullins is having a runner in Britain. Flat or jumps, the master of Closutton is always dangerous and can plunder any prize on these shores. Mullins has had just 11 runners at Doncaster in his entire career so it could be significant that he sends one over to Yorkshire on Friday. The Doncaster Cup is the big race of the day and Willie Mullins runs Stratum (16-1, bet365). This gallant performer has some top form across both codes and stays forever. Having won at Ascot last time out over an extended 2m5f, you know this guy won’t be outstayed. That run also indicated that his ability remains despite his advancing age.

Title-seeking William Buick takes the ride which is a huge positive. Historically, Mullins has always been good at snapping up the likes of Buick and Ryan Moore to ride his stayers. Buick was on board at Ascot last time and the pair will be looking to continue their successful partnership.

Friday’s race is over 2m2f which will suit Stratum better than the two-mile Group races which he has struggled in previously. Trueshan will obviously be a tough nut to crack but Stratum will be stronger at the line than in any other part of the race. Doncaster won’t be completely strange to him as he finished third in a 1m2f maiden there whilst trained by John Gosden in his early years.

Mullins is looking for his 15th flat winner in Britain over distances of two miles or more. Stratum is a bit of a legend who has seen it all in his seven-year racing career. A winner of a 1m2f flat maiden and a 3m1f chase, a big victory here would be well deserved.
