The Curragh hosts a bumper nine-race card on Sunday and racing fans won’t want to miss a second of it. There’s a tasty mix of Group action, as well as some valuable handicaps on offer. Obviously the race of the day is the Irish Derby so we’ve picked out some key trends to consider. Aidan O’Brien will be the trainer to follow so we’ve put three of his best chances into a treble and there are plenty of British raiders. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Aidan O’Brien treble

Alpha looks very difficult to oppose in the opening 7f maiden and she kept on well to finish second on debut last time out. The brilliantly bred filly is out of an Irish Guineas winner and this looks like an excellent opportunity for her to get off the mark.

Isaac Newton got right back on track when landing a Listed contest over 1m1f in the dying strides at at Navan last time out and this trip is probably ideal for him on that evidence. More improvement will be needed but the yard’s three-year-olds tend to progress throughout the season.

No trainer has won the Irish Derby more times than Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore has opted to ride impressive Chester Vase winner Benvenuto Cellini this year. He is much better than he was able to show at Epsom last time out and definitely deserves another chance.

Irish Derby trends

Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last 10 renewals and that includes each of the last three. He runs Benvenuto Cellini, Derby winner Christmas Day, Pierre Bonnard and Action.

Eight out of the last 10 winners had won a race that season beforehand and that perhaps doesn’t bode well for Pierre Bonnard and Action.

Nine out of the last 10 winners had previously finished in the first over 1m4f or further and only three of eight runners here have managed to do so. Benvenuto Cellini, James J Braddock and Christmas Day fit the bill.

British raiders

Last time out winner Toca Madera lines up the valuable Rockingham Handicap over 5f and the five-year-old absolutely bolted up at Doncaster. He could be of interest.

Crown Of Oaks was a very progressive handicapper last term and he was last seen winning the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot in October. Lesser Group races could be the way to go this season.

Owen Burrows sends the thoroughly unexposed Raaheeb over for the big one and the best is yet to come from him. He landed a Derby trial at Sandown impressively on just his second start.
