‘I think the price is an insult’ – Adrian Wall’s 40-1, 20-1 & 12-1 Cheltenham outsiders 🐎

Adrian Wall is back with his weekly feast of ITV Racing outsiders and he has picked out three horses who should outrun their large odds on New Year’s Day. Make sure you check out our free horse racing tips for the day, and remember, always bet responsibly.

1.55 Cheltenham

I have to admit that I squirm whenever I back a horse ridden by Sir David Maxwell, but I am willing to give Simply The Betts (20-1) a chance to shine here. The nine-year-old won twice over course and distance in early-2020 when trained by Harry Whittington, including a win in the Plate at the festival. Now with Paul Nicholls, he was second in this race last year from 4lb higher and arrives here off the back of a respectable run in the Paddy Power.

2.30 Cheltenham

Langer Dan (40-1) was second to Galopin des Champs in the 2021 Martin Pipe over this course and distance, so if he can recapture that sort of form he will look a monster of a price. He won a valuable handicap at Aintree last spring and although he has never won at Cheltenham, he has never ran a bad race here either. I think the price is an insult and he deserves respect even though he is stepping up in class.

3.05 Cheltenham

Hector Javilex (12-1) is a very lightly-raced five-year-old who has already won twice over hurdles. Those victories came at Southwell and Ludlow last March. He ran as well as could have been expected in the Persian War on his seasonal return and was a big eye-catcher when fourth at this venue in November. Lilly Pinchin set sail for home way too early and paid the price going up the hill, but this step up in trip with a more patient ride could be key.
