Irish trainer Ger Lyons is having a very fast start to the Flat season with six winners on the board already. Operating at 17 per cent so early in the season, he landed Listed honours with Dr Zempf and Power Under Me last weekend.
It must be hugely interesting that he sends one horse all the way to Nottingham Racecourse on Wednesday. He is based in Glenburnie Stables, Kiltale, Dunsany, Co. Meath. It is a 570-mile round trip from his yard across the Irish Sea to Nottingham.
With fuel costs surging through the roof the past couple of months, decisions to travel far with a horse won’t be taken lightly. You would have to assume that they are trying very hard. Let’s take a look at the horse in question.
Alan King’s classy runner Trueshan is likely to go off a very warm order for this Listed prize and rightly so. However, I can’t help but feel that the 10-1 at the time of writing this article with William Hill is absolutely massive on Ger Lyons’ mare YAXENI.
She was last seen winning the November Handicap at Naas on heavy ground last October, a race where Grade 1 runner-up over fences Dunvegan finished third. Yaxeni has a very good record fresh so it would be a surprise if she was not fit on her seasonal reappearance and with the Lyons camp in such good form, a big run has to be expected.
I felt that 3-1 would be about right for her so to see 10-1 available looks huge in my book. She will receive 12lb off Trueshan and that is a lot of weight to give a mare with her ability.
