‘He’s a Leger type’ – William Buick thinks he’s found the perfect St Leger horse

Most of the three-year-old Classics in Britain and Ireland are done and dusted this season, with only the Irish Oaks and the English St Leger to come. We got plenty of form pointers for the Doncaster showpiece in the Irish Derby at the Curragh last weekend and William Buick was on board one of the placed horses. He believes his mount could have the perfect profile and was very complimentary after the race. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

‘He’s a very genuine horse’

Lazy Griff is trained by Charlie Johnston and he proved that his second in the Epsom Derby was no fluke, by finishing third at the Curragh. The son of Protectionist got a little outpaced at a key stage but stuck to his task well, hitting the line strongly. That performance indicates that a step up in trip could be right up his alley, so a St Leger bid could be well be on the cards.

William Buick said: “He’s ran a blinder, in very different ground today to what it was at Epsom and I suppose he was kind of off it for a long way really. I was just rolling along with him and he was always going to finish his race well. He’d appreciate a bit more cut ideally but it was a super run and he’s a very genuine horse. He’s probably a Leger type of horse I’d say.”

There will be strong competition if he lines up at Doncaster and dual Derby winner Lambourn could well be heading over too. Carmers won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and the progressive colt will surely be one to consider.
