Judging from the relentless fashion in which he has attacked the championship this year, it must have wounded Brian Hughes to lose out to Harry Skelton in the jockeys’ championship last term. His sheer dominance from day one has been Tony McCoy-esque, churning out winners at an alarming rate. Hughes has been inhuman so far this season, more like well oiled machinery perfectly designed to do one thing and one thing only: ride winners.

The imperious form that Hughes has shown in the first two weeks of the month is frightening. Fourteen of his 48 rides have been winners which is a strike-rate of 29%. Going by these stats, it will be a profitable month for both Hughes and his backers. He is an unstoppable force of late and the juggernaut is fully expected to roll on.

Key to his success is his mindset and iron will. He recently stated: “I want to be champion jockey and ride more winners than anybody else – that’s what makes me tick. I want winners no matter if they are sellers or Grade 1s. Every winner gives me a kick and I’m always thinking of the next one.” This mentality perfectly explains why the man has ridden a massive 158 winners by mid-February. His powerful driving ride on Alan King’s The Unit last Thursday perfectly encapsulated Hughes’ refusal to be beaten as he willed his mount home to win by half a length.

February can be a somewhat precarious month for many jump jockeys as an injury at this time of the season can be devastating to their chances of riding their yard’s top hopes at the Cheltenham Festival next month. Brian Hughes is one man who won’t be occupying himself with those concerns as he recently revealed that he isn’t planning on riding at Cheltenham. This leaves Hughes free to attack the rest of the month with the same relentless intensity he has shown all season as he powers on towards the 200 winner milestone.
