“He is a bit special” – Does Nicky Henderson have the next Douvan on his hands?

Jonbon is an exceptionally well bred Coolmore Stud Walk In The Park full-brother to Douvan. He became the joint most expensive pointer sold when making £570,000 from Ellmarie Holden at Goffs Yorton Farm November Sale.

The beautiful specimen made a great first impression when winning on debut in a bumper at Newbury for Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus.

Led up by Robin Land, who looks after Altior (which could be a good sign of things to come), he was ridden by Nico de Boinville. Jonbon tanked powerfully through the race with ease and put the race to bed in a matter of strides.

Trainer quotes

“We’re very lucky to be sent horses like this,” said Henderson. “You feel the pressure that comes with it. We were waiting and hoping for what we thought would, and luckily did, happen.

“There are plenty of these horses who don’t turn out to be what they’re thought and it’s just lovely to see him do what he did today.

“He relaxed, raced beautifully and quickened up well. Thanks to JP for letting us have him. He’ll go back to JP’s Martinstown stud for the summer and we’ve all got a summer where we can dream of what might happen next season – I think he is a bit special.”

Cheltenham targets

Henderson added: “He’s a gorgeous horse who has the looks and pedigree. I spoke to Derek O’Connor, who rode him in his point, this morning and he came with big recommendations. It’s only the first step of what I hope will be a long and successful career – he’s something to look forward to.”

People are already thinking about the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and what race he might end up in. The obvious one is the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and he is top price 10-1 with bet365.
