‘He has the perfect profile’ – 20/1 ante-post tip for Saturday’s St Leger

The St Leger is the final British Classic of the season and it takes place at Doncaster on Saturday. It’s a highly prestigious race and Aidan O’Brien has a stranglehold in the market this year. He trains the first three in the betting but we’re looking to take him on with a 20/1 shot. Our selection finished fourth in the Derby in June and appears to have the perfect profile for this unique test. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.40 Doncaster (Saturday)

Deira Mile (20/1, bet365) showed some promise in four starts as a juvenile but didn’t quite manage to get off the mark. His best effort last term was undoubtedly his respectable fourth in very testing conditions here in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy.

The son of Camelot made no mistake when winning a Windsor novice with ease on seasonal debut. A step up in trip surely beckoned and he ran an absolute stormer to finish fourth in the Derby. City Of Troy was in a league of his own that day but this horse was only a length-and-a-half behind Irish Derby winner Los Angeles, who finished third.

It’s this piece of form that holds the key to his chances in the St Leger and whilst he lacked the tactical speed of those top 1m4f three-year-olds, he stuck to his task well. With that in mind, the extra two furlongs could be to his liking, as will the likely absence of both Derby winners.

Whilst it’s a little disappointing that he failed to win in Listed company at Windsor last month, that performance provided further evidence that the step up in trip will help and it could unlock his full potential.
