The Savills Chase is one of the highlights of the Christmas period. A Grade 1 event, we often get plenty of pointers for Cheltenham in March. It takes place at Leopardstown on Wednesday and Liam Bramall is taking on the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. We’ve also got the each way players covered with a juicy outsider to consider. Conflated (7-2, William Hill) gets the nod in the big race. This horse probably has the least to prove going in to it. A Plus Tard is the class horse in the race but after his dismal effort at Haydock last time, it’s difficult to know what we’re going to get from him. Galvin is another who disappointed last time out and had no excuses, having had a previous run. Conflated is left as the most reliable contender in the context of this race.
He finished third behind Envoi Allen at Down Royal last time out, beaten by four-and-a-half lengths. That was a fair effort on seasonal debut and improvement can be expected here as he should come on for the run. Despite not being the best horse in this race, there’s a good chance that he’ll come out on top this time.
French Dynamite (25-1, William Hill) is an interesting proposition, stepping into open Grade 1 company for the first time over fences. Ran a cracker in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham last time out when denied by less than a length. Started the season off with a cosy win over hurdles at Thurles over 2m7f. A horse on the upgrade and we haven’t seen the best of him yet. Improvement is obviously needed but it would be no surprise to see this horse run a big one.
