Harry Derham sends two runners on the 596-mile round trip to Newcastle

Simply getting a horse to the races is an expensive endeavour these days and it’s therefore worth taking note when a trainer sends runners on a particularly long trip. That’s the case on Tuesday with a couple of significant southern raiders to watch.

Harry Derham has made a bright start to his training career and is set to send two runners on the 596-mile round trip up to Newcastle, from his Berkshire base on Tuesday. The horses in question will be his first two runners there so far this season and he has a 50 per cent career strike-rate at the track. Girl Of Gold needs to find a bit of improvement if she’s to get off the mark here, having finished fifth in two bumpers so far. The four-year-old is related to several winners over both codes and it’s likely that the best is yet to come. Fergal O’Brien’s £90,000 purchase Blue Betty heads the market and James Owen’s rules debutante Scavengers Reign is also popular in the betting.

Ascending Lark is our selection in this race and she forms one leg of our three-horse accumulator. This daughter of Great Pretender is unbeaten in two starts over hurdles so far and managed to do the job convincingly under a penalty at Huntingdon when last seen. An opening mark of 113 looks pretty reasonable on the evidence we’ve seen so far, although she does have a substantial absence to overcome. The yard are in need of a winner but a recent string of seconds suggests success is just around the corner.
