‘They won a huge pot last week’ – Harry Cobden and Willie Mullins combine at Plumpton

Harry Cobden is arguably the best National Hunt jockey in Britain and he combined with the great Willie Mullins to win a huge pot last week, the Scottish Grand National. It could therefore be significant that the pair are set to join forces once again, this time at Plumpton. This time they’re taking aim at the £75,000 Sussex Champion Hurdle so we’re going to take a look at the horse’s profile. 4.05 Plumpton

Absurde is a very smart performer across both codes and was last seen finishing third behind stablemate Kargese in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham. Only beaten three lengths that day, it was an excellent run and he runs off a 2lb higher mark this time around.

He also ran a cracker in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November and was staying on strongly back in fifth, despite not having the pace to challenge. The son of Fastnet Rock remains lightly raced over hurdles, having had just six starts, and it’s entirely possible that the best is yet to come.

Mullins’ seven-year-old won the County Hurdle off a 10lb lower mark under Paul Townend back in 2024, getting the better of the subsequent Grade 1-winning chaser L’Eau du Sud. This race is his easiest task over hurdles in a while and a return to winning ways could be on the agenda.

Championship rival Dan Skelton will be trying to get the better of Mullins and he runs Knickerbockerglory and recent Aintree winner She’s A Saint. The Irishman runs four however, with Sir Gerhard, Daddy Long Legs and Tounsivator also declared but Cobden’s mount could prove hard to beat.
