One runner at Southwell has seen its price capitulate throughout yesterday evening and this morning. Having been available at 25-1 yesterday, the horse in question is now available at 10-1. It’s also worth noting that it’s just one firm offering that price with all the other major bookies offering single figure prices. Thursday is the last day of racing before Christmas which presents one final opportunity to pull off a gamble, heading into a three-day break. Visitant is the subject of this major market move. The David Thompson-trained nine-year-old has certainly been around the block, winning five times in a 37-race career. Three of those wins have come on the all-weather and his record is much more consistent on an artificial surface. Despite this, his best form has been at Newcastle and he is yet to place in four starts here at Southwell.
He was comfortably beaten last time out by Amourie who re-opposes here. In Visitant’s defence, that was his first start for nine months and he may well have needed the run. If significant improvement is on the way, you wouldn’t want to rule out a victory for Visitant.
His last win came at Newcastle three starts ago over 1m2f back in January. That came in a Class 6 Classified Stakes which means it isn’t much to write home about. However, the fourth-placed horse did boost the form somewhat by winning a similar race next time out.
Currently rated 47, on some of his older form he should be capable of winning a race of this stature. Before being off the track for 863 days, he won a handicap off 66 in December 2018. Perhaps he hasn’t quite been the same horse since but this is a very low mark and the form book suggests a win isn’t out of the question.
