It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the betting markets as plenty can be learned from doing so. Although there are never any guarantees, we do find out the level of confidence behind a horse’s chances. There’s been a significant move on one runner at Leopardstown on Monday and it’s particularly notable for us.
Our Nap of the day, who was as big as 20/1 in places on Sunday evening, has been the subject of sustained market support since. Currently available at an industry best price of 9/2, the horse in question is shorter in most places at time of writing. Stay Gold was initially selected by us at 9/1 but some bookies obviously didn’t fancy his chances, offering up 20/1 when pricing up after. The market support has been relentless since and he’s generally available at around 4/1. Connections try cheekpieces for the first time here and backers will be hoping that they have the desired effect.
Colm Murphy’s six-year-old has had five starts over hurdles thus far and he was keeping on before being hampered at a key stage at Leopardstown over Christmas. Whilst it’s not likely that Stay Gold would have troubled the principles, it’s fair to assume that he would have finished closer.
His best effort to date came in a handicap hurdle over course and distance in November and he wasn’t beaten far when finishing fifth on handicap debut. If producing a similar effort here, it’s easy to see him running a big race and it appears that we’re not the only ones to arrive at that conclusion!
Gordon Elliott’s Chemical Energy forms the first part of our each-way double and there also appears to be some confidence behind him. He was as big as 11/1 on Sunday evening and the nine-year-old has been trimmed into 7/1. Hopefully these omens point towards another good day for MyRacing!
