It’s Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday and it could be Frankie Dettori’s last. His ride in the opening race on the card is the subject of significant market confidence. Trawlerman (13-2, betfair) is likely to appreciate the switch to the inner track as he has an exceptional record on fast ground, winning five of his seven starts on good to firm. The good to soft here isn’t completely ideal but its better than the soft, heavy in places he would have to suffer on the other track. John & Thady Gosden’s charge could hardly be in better form going into the this race.

This five-year-old has won his last two starts by a total of 31 lengths and has done so at a canter. Whilst the form of his victory in Listed company at Newmarket last time out isn’t much, you can’t imagine any of his rivals would have won by much further. The step back up in grade is fully justified and he deserves his place in this field.

Third in this race last year, recent evidence would suggest he may be an improved horse this time around. It would be a welcome victory for Dettori who has a stellar book of rides to look forward to on the day. A win in the opening race would get him off to a flyer and will definitely get the crowd going.
