Conditions got pretty tough at Chester on Wednesday, which led to some substantial winning distances, including a 22-length victory in the Cheshire Oaks. It’s unlikely that the ground will dry up before Friday’s racing, so you’ll be looking for horses with proven records on soft ground. We’ve found four such horses and combined them into a monster 370-1 accumulator. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Savvy Victory (7-2, William Hill) has failed to finish outside of the first three in his three starts on soft ground. This includes an impressive victory in a Pontefract maiden last April. It was a five-runner race and all four of the beaten horses have won since. He was well-beaten third in the Chester Vase and a Newmarket Listed race on soft last year but this handicap is a much more suitable test and it wasn’t the ground that bested him. Ryan Moore is booked for the ride and a big run could be on the cards.
Point Lonsdale (6-4, Boylesports) has a perfect record in his two starts on soft ground. The first of those wins came in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the second was a resounding victory in a Group 2 at the Curragh two starts later. Returning after a 351-day absence at the Curragh last month, he scored in Group 3 company on heavy ground. It would appear that no amount of rain will bother this lad.
Call My Bluff (10-1, bet365) has had four starts on soft ground. His record of a win and two seconds is very solid and the only unplaced effort was too bad to be true. Dominic Ffrench Davis’ charge looked like he needed the run at Newbury last month and he should improve here. The handicapper was being a bit harsh by putting him up 2lb for that effort but he’s proven over this course and distance and should run well.
Novel Legend (2-1, William Hill) has won both of his starts so far this season, including an impressive six-length defeat of Call My Bluff at Newbury last time out. That was his only start on soft ground, giving him a 100 per cent record. He dealt with the conditions easily that day and should do so again here. This progressive stayer should cope with the step up in trip and he’s effectively 7lb well-in, running under a 3lb penalty instead of his revised mark of 95.
