Emmet Mullins sends two horses on 770-mile round trip to Musselburgh on Friday

It’s not that rare that Irish trainer Emmet Mullins sends a runner over to Britain. However, his Musselburgh runner on Friday will be just the fifth of his at the track in the last five years, one of which was a winner.

A 770-mile round trip is a long way to bring just two runners so as with all Irish raiders to the British track, these horses need plenty of respect with conditions looking ideal for his two representatives.

Based in County Carlow way down in the south-east of Ireland, the yard will have to drive all the way to Belfast, get a ferry to Scotland and then drive to Musselburgh. That’s a lot of money to lay out on expenses; fuel, staff etc.

4.30 Musselburgh

Running in the extended 2m1f maiden hurdle, the first of the Mullins runners is Full Metal Jacket, with Donagh Meyler aboard. This horse hasn’t been seen in nearly a year, but he finished third in a decent Punchestown bumper last season before disappointing in a bumper at Wexford when fourth to Mousey Brown. Interestingly, that winner won a Listed handicap at Fairyhouse a few days ago.

7.40 Musselburgh

The final Emmet Mullins runner of the evening runs in the bumper. Jewel Of Windsor is a well bred mare by It’s Gino who cost €28,000 as a three-year-old, and she is related to some very useful types. She hasn’t been seen since finish second in a point in 2021 but it’s interesting that she now makes her belated Rules debut wearing a hood. Mullins knows how to ready one first time and the market will guide.
