The Sky Bet Chase is a Listed handicap run over 3m at Doncaster Racecourse. Alan King, Paul Nicholls and David Pipe have historically done well in the race but it is generally a wide open affair. It is a race that doesn’t suit favourite backers with just two favourites winning in the last 16 runnings.
Last year, Takingrisks won the race at odds of 40-1 and you have to do just that when betting in this race, take risks. Here at myracing.com we look back at recent renewals and we will dissect the key stats to take into account when looking for the 2022 winner.
CANELO (14-1) is by far the most likely winner of the race according to the trends. He ticks the majority of the boxes and it would be no surprise to see a late flurry of money come for the JP McManus-owned runner. The nine-year-old son of Mahler had a disappointing 2021 but he always runs well at Doncaster. He won a novice hurdle here in the past and ran well from higher marks in handicap company here over fences. A bounce back to form is highly likely.
ROCCO (40-1) can’t be ignored at his current odds as he falls in behind Canelo at second place in the trends order. Nigel Twiston-Davies won this race three years ago with Go Conquer and there’s no way this boy should be the price he is. He was prominent when making an awful blunder at Cheltenham in December so that run can be forgiven. Prior to that he won a Listed chase at Wincanton off 134, staying on strongly in the closing stages and is only 3lb higher in the weights now.
