We will be treated to a stellar Newbury card live on ITV Racing on Saturday. Windsor Castle heroine Tactical bids to enhance his credentials in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes, while Sea The Stars colt Al Aasy takes on the classy Logician in the Aston Park.
Group class races awaits the winner of the Class 2 London Handicap at 3.00pm. Then we have the race of the day, the Lockinge, where the top-class Palace Pier looks set to go off a very strong favourite.
One man to watch out for at the track is Frankie Dettori, who of course needs no introduction. His record at Newbury Racecourse is phenomenal, returning a yield of 31 per cent in the last five years with 30 winners from 96 rides.
He has ridden seven winners from his last 15 rides at the track and in his career has a profit of £112.45. Given the fact what he rides is usually a short price, that is an unbelievable return.
Al Aasy is a warm order for this off the back of his runaway victory in the John Porter but he would struggle to beat a 100 per cent Logician. John Gosden’s 2019 St Leger winner has only raced twice since and was defeated for the first time when last seen in the Cumberland in October. If he bounces back to form on his return, he is the one to beat.
Usually a Group performer wins this handicap with the likes of Headman, Communique and Defoe winning it in recent years. Frankie may well be on a star in the making in Highland Rocker, another trained by John Gosden. The Gleneagles colt has improved for each start and won readily when last seen at Ripon. There could be a lot more to come now tackling handicaps.
It looks like one way traffic for the Lockinge and it will take a top performance to get the better of Palace Pier. He set up his campaign beautifully with an impressive 8-length win in a Group 2 at Sandown. A dual Group 1 winner as a three-year-old, he is going to be hard to beat in all of the top 1m races this season.
