Davy Russell and Gordon Elliot land 218/1 Downpatrick treble

It was certainly a day to remember for Cullentra House at Downpatrick and it all started with wins for Insane Bolt and Soldiers Hill.

Gordon Elliott and Davy Russell then went on to complete the 218/1 Downpatrick treble with Give Him Time, who was an un-fancied 12/1 poke in the second division of the Toals Phone Betting Available 7 Days A Week Handicap Hurdle.

It has been a while!

First seen in a four-year-old maiden point-to-point at Dawstown way back in May 2015, the Kalanisi gelding only got his first win under rules today so there is a sense of irony looking at his name!

Formerly trained by Nick Gifford across the water in the United Kingdom, he was having just his second start for Elliott and if any man can bring out major improvement in a horse, there’s no better than Gordon.

Give Him Time left ran over fences at Tipperary at the start of the month and ran an absolute shocker of a race so on form alone he ought to have been 50/1 today.

He looks like a horse that much prefers a hurdle and going right-handed and it was a surprise to many to see Give Him Time run out a seven length winner.

What next for the winner?

Assistant trainer Ian Amond said: “He looks that (a dual-purpose sort).

“The last day was nearly a write-off as he made a bad mistake. Gordon said to go back over hurdles with him to learn where we are going with him.

“He’ll be a nice horse for the summer – he can mix codes and is actually still for sale.

“He has won easy there and he’ll be able to do both jobs.

“Three good rides from Davy. Gordon is always lucky up here so it is a good day. He likes coming here and he always has plenty of runners, so he always comes back.”
