David Menuisier sends one runner on the 906-mile round trip to Ayr on Wednesday

Simply getting a horse to the races these days is a costly endeavour as fuel expenses continue to soar. Therefore it could be significant that David Menuisier sends one runner on the 906-mile round trip to Ayr on Wednesday. The West Sussex-based trainer could hardly be further away from the Scottish track so it’s no surprise that the horse in question is just his third ever runner at the track. 3.20 Ayr

Heartache Tonight is understandably prominent in the market for Ayr’s feature race. The Listed Rothesay Stakes over 1m2f has attracted a field of eight and it appears to present Menuisier’s filly with a cracking opportunity to return to winning ways.

Her best effort to date was a fourth-place finish in the Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp last May and she was less than two lengths behind the winner. Surely a repeat of that effort would give her every chance of claiming victory here.

It was a very below-par effort from the four-year-old on her seasonal reappearance earlier this month. She was a well beaten fourth but she’s expected to improve for the run and the return to 1m2f will also help. Clearly that performance isn’t an accurate reflection of her ability and she’s capable of much better.

David Menuisier has been in fine form of late and he tasted Classic success with victory in the German 2000 Guineas on Monday. That certainly bodes well for her chances here and a return to the winners’ enclosure could be on the agenda.
