Chester Day 3: Irish raiders galore, 40/1 and 22/1 outsiders, plus Huxley Stakes trends

We’ve been treated to some top racing across the first couple of days at Chester and there’s more to come on Friday. One of the races of the day is the Group 2 Huxley Stakes and we’ve picked out some key trends to consider. Here are a couple of big outsiders in both of Chester’s marathon races, including a 40/1 shot, and there are plenty of Irish raiders to keep an eye on. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Huxley Stakes trends

Ryan Moore is a trend in himself in this race, holding the record for most number of wins for a jockey. He has ridden the winner in five of the last nine renewals and will be on board Lambourn.

Eight of the last nine winners were aged four or five and whilst that applies to the majority of the field, it doesn’t bode well for six-year-olds Sparks Fly or Royal Rhyme.

Well fancied runners have a good record in recent years, with the biggest price winner in the last decade being 6/1. Bay City Roller and Lambourn could well be the ones to follow.

Chester outsiders

The Chester Cup is a prestigious race and Tashkan (40/1, bet365) shouldn’t be underestimated on his best form. Brian Ellison’s eight-year-old is a previous course and distance winner and has slipped to an attractive mark. He’s capable of making his presence felt.

Venetia Williams has history in this race, winning it in 2021 and 2022, and Morning Air (22/1, Boylesports) looks potentially well treated. She was ninth in the Chester Cup last year and this consolation race should be a little easier. A 6lb lower mark should help her cause too.

Irish raiders

Derby and Irish Derby winner Lambourn runs in the Huxley Stakes, Aidan O’Brien’s only representative on the card. Joseph O’Brien is sending plenty of runners over on Friday and Kingstonian will be popular with the punters in the Chester Plate.

Galileo Dame is attracting interest at the head of the mark in the Chester Cup and Ryan Moore has been booked for the ride. Don’t Discount Puturhandstogether either, as he brings some very useful form to the table. Billy Loughnane will be on board.
