Cheltenham Festival top jockey Rachael Blackmore goes to Clonmel for one ride

Honeysuckle - Cheltenham Mares' Hurdle 2020 (JG)

There is no jockey in jumps racing riding as high as Rachael Blackmore at the moment and fresh from her record breaking success at Cheltenham, it is notable that she travels to Clonmel for just one ride on Tuesday.

Blackmore became the first female winner of the Ruby Walsh trophy for top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival. She partners Added Bonus in the 4.05 contest. John J Walsh’s charge was beaten just a neck last time out at this venue and is looking to shed its maiden tag.

The son of extremely successful but sadly short lived sire Jeremy, Added Bonus looks sure to attract plenty of support, particularly with Blackmore aboard. The seven-year-old has progressed in all three handicap runs so far and has more scope for improvement than most of his rivals here.

Great record for the trainer

Blackmore also has a strong record when riding for Walsh, with four winners from twenty rides in the last five seasons, a twenty per cent win ratio. That is notably better than Walsh’s general four per cent strike rate in the same time period.

Clonmel is also one of Blackmore’s most successful hunting grounds, she operates at an eighteen per cent strike rate at the track, her joint best win percentage of any Irish course. Therefore, punters would do well to pay attention to her trip to the County Tipperary track for just one ride.

To go with her six winners at the festival, that was one shy of the record. Blackmore is hot on the heels of Paul Townend for the Irish jump jockeys championship. The race is much closer than in previous years. Blackmore is pulling out all the stops to try and secure her first jockeys championship.
