Astronomical improver goes for a seven-timer at Newbury on Saturday 🚀

We’re used to seeing horses go on long winning streaks before the handicapper catches up. Hat-tricks and four-timers are relatively common but it’s not very often that we see a horse win six in-a-row. We have one such horse in our midst and she’s set to go for a seven-timer at Newbury on Saturday. This would be an unbelievable achievement and it’ll be fascinating to see how she does. Sparks Fly (11-4, William Hill) has to be in the argument for the most progressive horse in training. She’s had an unbelievable season thus far and completed a six-timer at Ayr when last seen. David Loughnane’s three-year-old began her turf season with victory off a lowly mark of 59 at Windsor in April. Her most recent victory has seen her go up to a mark of 98, meaning she has risen 39lb up the handicap in just three months.

Another interesting aspect of this winning run is that she has an unbeaten record on turf, as her win back in April was her debut on the grass. Laura Pearson has been on board for four of the six wins and that very successful partnership is maintained here. Although Sparks Fly hasn’t needed Pearson’s 3lb claim so far, there will come a time soon when it could make the difference.

The amount of improvement she has shown in such a short space of time is very impressive and the style of her victory at Ayr last time out didn’t suggest the handicapper was catching up. A win here would surely lead to a three-figure mark and that would put her close to Listed or Group 3 class.
