The opening race on the card at Fairyhouse on Monday is the feature event, a Group 3 for fillies and mares over an extended 1m1f. There is an extra dimension added to this race as a British-trained runner is coming over to spoil the party. Added to this, said runner is the first at the track for Archie Watson and connections won’t want to return empty-handed. Currently available at a substantial price of 16-1, the horse in question has potentially snuck under the radar. Pink Carnation is the runner in question and she probably has a bit to find on her form so far. Archie Watson’s charge wasn’t beaten far when second in a Listed race at Nottingham over 1m2f on soft ground back in May. She was just outstayed that day and perhaps this extended 1m1f will be to her liking. Her last win was an impressive performance on soft ground over 1m1f in a handicap at Hamilton in August 2022 and both pieces of form suggest conditions will be suitable here.
The very reliable Danny Tudhope goes over to take the ride and that is never a bad thing. He has a strike-rate of 33 per cent in Ireland so far this season, with two winners from his six rides. Tudhope is also looking for his first winner at Fairyhouse, have ridden here only twice before.
Related to plenty of winners, there’s something to like about Pink Carnation’s pedigree. Her dam’s half-sister won a Grade 2 in the US over 1m1f and that certainly bodes well here. This filly is probably still learning and there could well be more to come.
