89-1 double: two huge gambles unfolding at Kempton on Wednesday 📉

Kempton Racecourse

There are two significant gambles underway on Wednesday morning. Two runners at Kempton‘s evening meeting have been very well backed. The horses in question are 9-1 and 8-1 at time of writing, having been available at 22-1 and 20-1 the previous evening. With this in mind, we’ve combined both runners into an 89-1 double. It’ll be interesting to see how this fascinating double gamble plays out. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Oasis Gift has flopped badly in two handicap starts so far but he’s lightly raced and it’s too early to write him off. A winner of a maiden at Chepstow in September, it’s a positive sign that he’s already proven himself capable of getting his head in front. Another reason to be optimistic is that he had wind surgery over the winter and that can often facilitate dramatic improvement. The handicapper has responded accordingly to his disappointing efforts, dropping him 3lb for his latest effort over course and distance back in October. Perhaps we can expect more from Clive Cox’s gelding this year and it certainly seems like the market is predicting significant progression.

Hackberry is the mount of teenage riding sensation Billy Loughnane, in the final race of the evening. It would be easier to be more confident if this race was at Newcastle, as his sole win and two seconds have both come on the Tapeta there. His victory came off a mark of 58 and he’s currently on a 3lb higher mark.  It’s probably a good thing that he returns to the Flat here, as his three starts over hurdles were uninspiring and his run at Wolverhampton in between was an improvement. Loughnane’s 5lb claim will certainly come in handy and it’s an absolute steal. Added to that, the claim also means Hackberry is effectively running off a mark 2lb lower than when last winning.
