The most interesting thing about Duke Of Leggagh from the perspective of the gamble he is the subject of is the fact that so little can be known about him. He’s an unraced, seemingly homebred colt without a standout pedigree. The sire was a useful but not exceptional two-year-old who placed in the Phoenix stakes. He was precocious which could be useful if that trait is transferred into his progeny.
This is trainer Michael Mulvany’s first juvenile runner of the season which further adds to the mystery and intrigue. There’s no way of knowing what to expect from Mulvany’s juveniles as we are yet to see any on the track this campaign.
The bookies certainly weren’t expecting much from this colt when they priced this race up last night as the opening price of 50-1 didn’t suggest there was much confidence. The support has since come for him which has resulted in the capitulation of his price with 11-1 the best available price and most firms being shorter. There will certainly be plenty of eyes on this race now as a result of this fascinating gamble.
