3 potential superstars to watch in Ireland next week

Covert Love winning the Irish Oaks

The return of Irish racing has been long awaited. From an original return date in late June, we are now able to enjoy racing from Monday, just a week behind the UK. It’s a packed first week of action so we’ve picked out three potential superstars to watch next week.

Mogul – Leopardstown on Tuesday

The Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial has a long history of classy winners and is a great pointer for Epsom. Mogul is just 8/1 for the Derby itself and puts his credentials on the line this week.

A mile looked on the short side for him last season so the step up to ten furlongs looks ideal. Fourth in the Vertem Futurity Trophy when last seen, he looks well up to that Group 1 class and should make a step towards a potential classic success on Tuesday.

New York Girl – Navan on Wednesday

A filly that the yard have always liked. In his Betfair blog last season, Joseph O’Brien said “we have always had stakes ambitions” for her. They achieved that winning a Group 3 on just her second start.

She may reappear on Wednesday in the Listed Salsabil Stakes, making her first foray into middle distance racing. She will have a penalty to carry but shapes as a filly with an awful lot more in the tank.

Siskin – Curragh on Friday

The first of the classics comes in Ireland on Friday afternoon, the Irish 2000 Guineas. Unbeaten in four starts as a juvenile, Ger Lyons’ charge steps up to a mile for the first time.

He already has a Group 1 victory under his belt, though he blotted his copybook somewhat when getting upset in the stalls at Newmarket last autumn. Connections could find no reason for that and reports from the yard suggest they have been happy with his progress over the winter.
