3 First Time Headgear Stat Picks for Saturday + 89/1 Acca

Newcastle Racecourse - Beware The Bear and Sean Bowen

It’s no secret that the addition of headgear can be the making of a horse. Of course, it doesn’t always work but it’s an angle that we at myracing have always enjoyed and it’s provided some big priced winners down the years.

There are certain trainers who do better when they fit headgear than others. The ITV racing from Ascot and Haydock this weekend is cracking but we’ve dug into the smaller cards at Newcastle and Lingfield to find an 89/1 first headgear acca.

Nicky Richards is a yard to follow when fitting cheekpieces. Three of his last six runners to have had the headgear fitted for the first time have come home in front. Skiddaw Tara is his representative here who showed a consistent level of form over hurdles last season.

His chasing debut was modest so it is not a surprise to see the cheekpieces fitted now but this trip on deep ground were his ideal conditions over the smaller obstacles. His win at Carlisle in March would make this a workable enough mark if the headgear has the desired effect.

Ralph Beckett has his yard in absolutely flying form at present, four winners from his last six runners. Beckett is also a trainer to follow when he fits a visor, four of his last nine winning when sporting the headgear for the first time.

Afraid Of Nothing is his representative in a small field fillies contest. She generally goes from the front and is the only one in here who does so. She should be able to get an easy lead as such and, in a race where only she and one other have realistic chances at the weights, she looks the one to beat.

Lucinda Russell has won with three of her last seven runners that she has added a visor to for the first time as she does with Ain’t My Fault in this contest. He won when fitted with cheekpieces for the first time, though they failed to work on a second occasion.

To be fair to him, that was a much deeper contest than either his winning one or this. A visor being tried here might be able to coax him to put his best foot forward once more, giving him something different to think about.
