The £350,000 Betfair Sprint Cup takes place at Haydock on Saturday. It’s one of the major Group 1 6f races on the calendar and looks set to be a competitive renewal. There is no standout contender at this stage with some firms going 4-1 the field. Minzaal is the current market leader but we’ve got an outsider at a big price for you to consider. Castle Star (25-1, William Hill) was not far from the top of the tree as a juvenile last term. His final start as a two-year-old came in a particularly warm renewal of the Middle Park at Newmarket. It was a strong performance as he was narrowly denied by Commonwealth Cup-winner Perfect Power. He proved himself a useful horse by winning the Marble Hill and placing in the Railway Stakes.
His trainer has confirmed that he needed the run badly when fifth over the minimum trip at the Curragh on his only start this season. Returning to 6f is highly likely to suit as his best form is over this trip. Combining the extra furlong with the fact that he’ll be fitter and sharper here should facilitate a much improved effort. This is a steep increase in grade but all of his form suggests he could be up to the task.
Fozzy Stack’s charge is very adaptable with regards to ground having won a Group 3 on soft to heavy going and placing in the aforementioned Group 1 on good to firm. Conditions are currently good at Haydock so it’s good to know he’s likely to run his race even if the ground goes either way. 25-1 is a juicy price and it certainly wouldn’t be a shock to see him finish in the frame.
